Olena Drozdova has outlined major legal problems associated with the return of political prisoners to Ukraine
Ukraine has been taking all possible steps to return its citizens convicted in foreign countries to their home country. In real life, however, these efforts are insufficient, because a majority of the recent cases of Ukrainian political prisoners detained abroad have been politically motivated.
Together with Drozdova & Partners Law Firm’s Director Olena Drozdova, the news agency UNIAN has tried to understand why Ukraine fails to return its citizens convicted in the Russian Federation.
In particular, she has noted that at present there is no uniform document that would contain at least an approximate list and description of instruments to be used to return political prisoners to Ukraine. That is why the most effective tool now is negotiating at the levels of ombudsmen and governments of the respective countries.
